The LCI(L) or Landing Craft Infantry
(Large) was designed to carry large amounts of troops across the ocean
directly to the beaches. Before the LCI(L), landing craft were carried
by larger transports and unloaded offshore before troops could be loaded
aboard. This put the invasion forces at risk for a longer period of time
and reduced the element of surprise. The LCI(L) were built in several types,
three of them are available from Loose Cannon Productions. A US version
and a UK version of the early types with port and starboard ramps and a
later version with a built in bow door ramp. |
LCI(L) US Version Kit
#48 - LCI(L) 1-350 US $20.00 |
|
Two ships are included in the kit. They are cast waterline
style on a thin resin wafer. This one is the US version with the tall square
conning tower. The hull is molded with most of the detail cast on. The
main superstructure is a separate part. 20 mm guns and life rafts are included.
There is a little bit of flash on these parts but it is very thin and easily
removable. Also included are plastic strips to make the ramps with. |

The instructions are front and back of
an A size sheet of paper. The front has specifications and a bit of history.
The back side includes a plan and elevation view with some general tips
for working with resin. What is lacking is an exploded view showing where
parts are placed. But it should be noted that there are only a few parts
and it shouldn't be too hard to figure where everything goes. |

LCI(L) UK Version Kit
#49 - LCI(L) 1-350 UK $20.00 |
|
Two ships are included in the kit. They are cast waterline
style on a thin resin wafer. As with the US version the hull and superstructure
are cast separate. There are ramps cast onto the wafer but thankfully plastic
strip is included so you will not need to use the resin ones. This version
captures the low profile look of the British version. Splinter shields
on this and the other versions are fairly thin. |

LCI(L) Centerline Ramp Version Kit
#50 - LCI(L) 680-1089 (BOWDOOR) $20.00 |
|
Two ships are included in the kit. They are cast waterline
style on a thin resin wafer. There are two resin blocks of unknown use
also cast on that wafer. Perhaps they are floating dock sections. This
version has the bow doors and rounded conning tower of later designs. The
casting is pretty good on all versions. What appears to be aztec stairs
on this version is built that way on the real ship. |

None of the kits include photo etch, but all you will really need is
some generic 2 bar railing and most of us have plenty of that. They sell
for $20.00 a set, not a bad price for accurate landing craft. They will
make a nice addition to your amphibious fleet. |
