The West German Navy launched Deutschland
in 1960 a newly built training ship and the first constructed by this nation
since the end of World War Two. The Deutschland was a unique ship with
a destroyer like fit on a wide cruiser like hull. The wider beam allowed
for classrooms to be built for training. The ship had a wide variety of
weapons and fittings that allowed the New West German Navy get an idea
of what future ships would need.
This new kit from NNT captures that unique look of this German training
ship. |

HULL |
The kit is cast with much of the superstructure in the typical waterline
style. Most of the superstructure is cast with it. Surface detail is very
good and this really shows up with the overhanging platforms cast with
no imperfections. The walls have quite a bit of detail cast on. |

SUPERSTRUCTURE, ARMAMENT, AND DETAILS |
There are only a few separate superstructure parts, but they are very
well done. I especially like the open bridge with the interior details.
The funnel is cast with horizontal bands around the circumference. |
The details are all nicely done, with little to no flash. Some of the
parts are cast on a thin resin wafer and the others on a resin sprue. The
gun barrels are extremely thin and delicate. The gun turrets are nicely
shaped. |
There are plenty of life raft canisters nicely cast to add to your
ship. The main gun barrels are also cast in resin. These would look better
if replaced by turned brass barrels. The gun directors and radar came out
very well. The radar antenna are very fine and well done. The mast will
be OK if you don't rig your ship. If you plan to add rigging, you can use
this part as a template for a brass version. |
There are two types of ships boats included with three of each type.
The open boats are pretty detailed, but the covered ones are a bit plain
looking. |
PHOTO ETCH |
A photo etch fret is included with the lattice mast details. Rigging
details, and radar are among the other parts on the fret. Relief etching
is included to give the parts a more 3D appearance. |
DECALS |
Decals include warning circles, flags, and ships number markings.
These are sharp and well registered. |
INSTRUCTIONS |
The instructions are in German, however the parts locations
are shown using graphic diagrams.
