Yankee Modelworks
USS North Carolina Class Photo Etch Set reviewed by Timothy Dike |

The new Trumpeter North Carolina is another welcome addition to the growing line of 1/350 ships. It is state of the art for plastic injection molding, but is lacking in the detail department. Yankee Modelworks has produced a nice fret with plenty of detail parts to spruce that kit up.

The first fret contains the railings, ladders, raft bottom netting, and 20 mm guns among other things. The fret is relief etched which helps bring out the details and give depth to otherwise flat parts. One of my favorite additions is the spotting chairs, and item you don't normally see in a detail set.

The second fret includes the catapults, aircraft and boat cranes, as
well as the 40 mm gun shields. Radar's, and antenna and a multitude of
other detail items are also included. The relief etching makes items like
the radar screens really stand out.

The instructions are eleven pages with detail views, actual weapons
drawings, and drawings showing their placement on the Trumpeter kit. These
are more extensive than earlier efforts and I find the weapons drawings
very helpful and informative.
