1/700 Modern Soviet Cruiser and Destroyer
Photo etch set by Gold Medal Models
Things are looking up for the Soviet/Russian Ship modeler. There was a time when only a handful of Skywave Soviet ships were available. Now Pit-Road, Trumpeter, and Dragon all have a new Kirov Class Battle cruiser on the market. Dragon is reissuing some of the old Skywave kits, and resin ship manufacturers like Combrig are providing quite a variety of subjects. However until recently your aftermarket upgrades have been limited. To keep pace with these new kits Gold Medal Models has reissued it's own photo etch set. But this is more than a reissue, it's is a total makeover. It now includes more parts and much finer etching. It covers the cruisers and destroyers of the cold war era to modern times. This is not just an upgrade set for one ship, this set can be used to upgrade several different ships. Note only that but you should have some parts left over for other projects.

The quality is typical of the latest Gold Medal Models sets with relief etching on a thin stainless steel sheet. The parts will be easy to assembly thanks to the well defined fold lines

The instructions are great, not only do they clearly show how the photo etch parts fold up and assemble, they also show how the photo etch parts integrate with the kit parts they work with. Many parts in this set are custom designed to work with the various kits that are available. Evidently Loren Perry of Gold Medal Models has done his home work and taken the extra time to test fit these parts with those kits. There are also elevation drawings of the Krivak, Sovremenny, Udaloy, and Kirov class ships with leaders indicating which parts are used on each ship.

Conclusions:

This set is an absolute must have for the Modern Soviet or Russian era modeler. It covers all the currently available plastic kits on the market and retails for $18.00 US. A good price when you consider how many kits it will do.
