Tom’s Modelworks continues to expand their range of 3D printed accessories. Among the new items is an upgrade part for modelers building any of the "Standard" USN Battleships in 1/350, item 350-3 "Battleship aircraft crane strongback". This can be used on any US battleship from Nevada to West Virginia, even after their modernizations.

BATTLESHIP AIRCRAFT CRANE STRONGBACK
The upgrade set consists of one, 3d
printed, 1/350 scale "strongback" which was to support the aft aircraft
handling crane on US standard battleships. Tom's website says that
the parts is "Designed for use with the crane boom on Tom's Modelworks
sets 3502 and 3528. Will likely work for any manufacturer's set that includes
this style of crane."
Detail is crisp and well defined. The part is much more realistic than those found on the old 1/350 injection molded USS Arizona, or on resin standard battleships. Photos below show the part alongside both the Arizona crane and a resin strongback. Also shown is the part with a photo-etch crane, attached to a model of the USS Oklahoma, sans rigging. |

CONCLUSIONS | |||||||||
This is a really useful and well done accessory for US Navy battleship modelers. It's a major improvement over both injection molded and resin kit parts, and will bring an added level of realism to those kits. The part costs $10.00 USD, and is available directly from Tom's Modelworks. It's also available in 1/700 scale. Highly recommended! |
