HISTORY | |||||||||||||
DUKW Amphibious trucks were developed from the famous "deuce and a half" standard truck in use by the US Army in World War Two. The Deuce was enclosed with floats, given a power take-off for a propeller, and the DUKW was born! These vehicles saw service not only in amphibious ocean assaults, but were also used in aid of crossing some of the large European rivers, most famously the Rhine. What does DUKW stand for?
D=First year of production code "D" is for 1942
U=Body style "U" utility truck (amphibious)
K=Front wheel drive. GMC still used that on trucks into the mid 1980's (K5 Chevy Blazer)
W=Two rear driving wheels (tandem axle)
L'Arsenal has a set of 10 DUKW's available in 1/350. This set includes 5 with open cargo areas, 5 enclosed, and 5 amphibious trailers! |

PARTS | |||||||||||||
The trucks have generally good dimensions and details. There are some pinholes and flash to clean up on the bottom, but these would be rarely seen areas. The DUKW's even have the tunnel in the rear with a small prop, and the surf plate wave deflector on the hood. (The plate is not positionable) Each vehicle also has some minmal cargo on the back deck, namely a spare tire and some jerrycans. The only things missing from these DUKWs are the distinctive bumpers they sometimes carried, and the long hand-powered bilge pump, usually seen as a long tube running along the outside top of the starboard hood. |
