The
Flyhawk Royal Navy Seaplane Dockyard Base
Flyhawk’s has released a 1/700 Royal Navy Seaplane Dockyard Base, kit FH1161. This "diorama in a box" comes in a cardboard box, which opens at the ends, with a painting of the fictional seaplane base on the box top. On the back is colored panel to be used as the "water" for the base. There are eight sprues - two of which are clear - one set of photo-etch, a decal sheet and instructions inside the box. On the sprues are parts for a large pier with ramp, a small dock, a building, water tower, three vehicles, a patrol boat and two Short Sunderland seaplanes (these are the clear sprues). |

SPURE A |
The pier is one large piece. It's well molded with an engraved pattern to simulated poured concrete.
SPRUE B | |||||||||
This sprue has the water tank, bulkheads for the pier, a small "wooden" dock (which is really nicely molded) and some other small parts for the diorama.
SPRUE C | |||||||||
There is a building included in the package, and you'll find it here. As with everything else, it's well done, especially the roof.
SPRUE D | |||||||||
The three vehicles included in the set and one of the boats (which is meant to be carried by one of the vehicles) is on this sprue. Flyhawk's small boats are excellent.
SPRUE E | |||||||||
The injection molded legs for the water tower are on this sprue.
SPRUE GB 44 | |||||||||
A motor patrol boat comes with the set. You'll find the hull, a separate deckhouse and foc'sle, a mast and some weapons.
SPRUE GB45 (x2) | |||||||||
This sprue consists of the Short Sunderland seaplanes. Other than the fact that the aircraft are clear plastic (I think clear plastic is hard to work with), the detail is terrific. These are cleverly engineered - all the canopies appear to be separate pieces, so you can paint the planes and then add the canopies.
PHOTO-ETCH | |||||||||
The is a small photo-etch set included. It includes PE versions of the water tower legs, rails for the patrol boat, props for the Sunderlands, figures and other assorted parts. It's all very high quality.
DECALS | |||||||||
There is one small decal sheet included with the kit, consisting of different styles of ensigns, aircraft codes, roundels and fin flashes.
INSTRUCTIONS AND BASE | |||||||||
The instructions are in the form of a small color booklet and are well done.

CONCLUSIONS | |||||||||
This is a really interesting (would
"cool" be a better word?) release from Flyhawk.
The possibilities here are almost endless. You can build it as is,
or incorporate it into a larger diorama.
This is Flyhawk’s 1/700 Royal Navy Seaplane Dockyard Base, kit FH1161. The kit appearls to retail for around $44.00 USD, and should be available from many of our fine sponsors. Thanks to Flyhawk for the review sample. Recommended, especially for fans of small combatants and dioramas. This is an in box review, your mileage may vary once you start assembly. |
