I'm going to be completely honest here and
say that while I normally write a bit of history for each product I review,
I know absolutely nothing about the 3M HA Range finder in German service
during WWII. What's more, I can't find anything at all on the things online,
either. There are several aftermarket companies that produce them, so they're
a popular accessory. Swordfish's website list them as "Type "3U" for 105
and 127 mm guns" on Kreigsmarine ships, but other than that, I got nothin'.
That out of the way, I can report on what I do have in-hand from Swordfish
models. In keeping with their previous offerings, this set of four range
finders stuck inside of a plastic blister pack. I'm a huge fan of rein
accessories being packaged in this manner, as chances of damage during
shipping are nearly zero.
The platform/base upon which the bulk of the apparatus sits is extremely
thin and warp free. Optical elements and cabling are very finely produced
and look the part. Some of the cabling is so fine that at first I took
it for stray resin shedding off of the parts, but since all four pieces
have the same effect in the same placement and manner, it's obvious it's
intentional and ridiculously fine. Minimal support structures will make
these easy to remove for painting and installation. As can be seen in the
final photo, there are some print layer lines in the pieces, but they're
not visible to the naked eye: that photo was taken with a macro lens from
less than 1" away.
