HISTORY

The AN/SPG-55 was an American tracking and illumination radar used for target tracking and surface-to-air guidance for Terrier missiles. The SPG-55 had two antennas: the larger main antenna dish and the small capture antenna dish. The main antenna handled tracking, guidance, and continuous wave (CW) illumination. The capture antenna was used to capture and guide the beam-riding Terriers into the guidance beam. The AN/SPG-55 was fitted on the following US Navy ships:

  • Kitty Hawk-class aircraft carrier
  • Belknap-class cruiser
  • Leahy-class cruiser
  • Farragut-class destroyer
  • USS Long Beach (CGN-9)
  • USS Bainbridge (CGN-25)
  • USS Truxtun (CGN-35)

It was also fitted on the following Italian Navy ship classes:

  • Andrea Doria-class cruiser
  • Giuseppe Garibaldi-class cruiser
  • Vittorio Veneto-class cruiser

Hellenic 5-inch/54-Caliber Mark 42 Gun Set

Hellenic Ship Model has produced a 1:350 scale 3D printed AN/SPG-55 Radar Set launcher set which contains a total of four radar units with separate bases. The print raft comes in a zip lock bag stored inside a clamshell plastic box. Each radar unit is fully assembled and very nicely detailed along with delicate railings on the back. You will just need to very carefully remove the radar unit and its base from the print raft, attach the base to the bottom of the radar unit, paint and attach to your model. As the photos show, one of the bases had come loose from the print raft on its journey from Greece to Long Island, New York.

CONCLUSIONS
This accessory set from Hellenic Ship Model is very well done and easy to use. The set provides parts for four radars, which is quite generous for the price of €8.00 or about $9.25 US. This is a bargain as this breaks down to €2.00 or about $2.30 each. It will greatly enhance any 1:350 scale ship model that is fitted with AN/SPG-55 radars, especially any of the Iron Shipwrights kits of one of the modern USN ships mentioned above that might be in your stash. I would like to thank Kostas Kokkinos of Hellenic Ship Model for the review sample.
