Swordfish Naval Models Accessories has sent us some additional products to review, including 1/350 90 MM GUN MOD 1939 WITH BLASTBAG. This weapon, which was used by the Regia Marina, was, according to NavWeaps, "Developed by Ansaldo, these ... guns had good ballistic properties for their caliber, but their stabilized mountings were too advanced for their time and experienced many technical faults. The mountings were stabilized in four axes; training, elevation, roll correction and pitch correction. Eleven gyros were used in a very complex arrangement to maintain stabilization. RPC was fitted but removed from the Duilo class in 1942, apparently because of water damage. The Littorio class had their mountings located much higher and retained RPC. However, even these ships suffered from frequent electrical and mechanical breakdowns." | |||||||||||

THE PARTS | |||||||||||
As is the norm, the parts arrive in
a plastic clamshell container. Inside is one long print raft, with
the parts for 90mm AA guns. Overlaid on top of the parts is a large
piece of cotton, to prevent breakage. You can see the remnants of
the cotton in the pictures - it's hard to get off.
According to the Swordfish website, one of these mounts is for the port side and the other for the starboard side. Each 90mm mount consists of three pieces. The detail is decent, and more subtle than the parts found in the Trumpeter Littorio class kits, though there are visible print lines on all the parts, especially the turrets. There are ladders printed on the sides of the base of the mounts, and the blast bags are nicely rendered. As with all 3D printed parts, use caution removing them from the print raft. |

There are no instructions. If you go to the
product page on the Swordfish website, you'll find generic instructions
on how to remove the parts from the print raft.

CONCLUSIONS | |||||||||||
Swordfish Models continues to release new 3D printed
accessory sets, including these Regia Marina 90mm AA guns, which are specifically
designed for the Littorio-class kits. As with the other sets I've
seen, these are a solid entry into the ever expanding world of 3D printed
accessories, with good details. While there are some visible print
lines, they do look better than the Trumpeter kit parts. Recommended.
