HISTORY

The Classic Warships's latest Warship Pictorial is #41 USS Midway CV-41. Authored by CDR Pete Clayton, USN, this edition is different than the other 40 works in this series. This book has fewer full-page images than usual, and considerably more text. This is not to say the book is without images; it contains 114 B&W photos, with four color photos on the inside and outside covers. The text and photos don't spend too much time discussing the design and construction of Midway, spending only two pages on the topic. The following 18 pages cover Midway's first 10 years of operations in the Atlantic Fleet, then devotes a few pages to the SCB-110 angled flight deck conversion.

After the reconstruction, Midway served in the Pacific fleet for eight years, including combat operations over Vietnam. In 1966 she again returned to the yards for modernization, returning to the fleet and subsequent Vietnam service in 1971. This book continues to discuss her various deployments and alterations to her decommissioning in the early 1990's. Midway was donated to the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum in 2003. The last part of the book is a matrix of Midways various deployments and aircraft complements.

Scans are reduced quality and the captions have been blurred.
Conclusions:

Warship Pictorial #41 is a good history of the ship, and a bit of a departure from the normal Warship Pictorial. If you're a fan of Midway and Cold War carriers, then this book is worth picking up!
