USS Sullivans DD-537 Oct 2009
While attending the October 2009 Nautical Research Guild annual conference in Buffalo, NY, I met Leo Kane. He served as engineering officer on the USS Sullivans in the early 60's. Leo had just spent the afternoon visiting his old ship. The USS Sullivans is a square bridge WWII Fletcher Class Destroyer that was FRAMed and lasted until 1965. She now is on display at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park, http://www.buffalonavalpark.org/. The DANFS history can be found here: http://www.hazegray.org/danfs/destroy/dd537txt.htm. Her NavSource page is here: http://www.navsource.org/archives/05/537.htm. After speaking with Leo for most of the evening about the Sullivans I couldn't pass up a chance to see her myself. The next day I drove to the Military Park and was surprised to find a very well laid out display. The ships and sub are in excellent condition. I followed the tour with the pamphlet that You receive when I paid my admission. The first 2/3's of the photos are the tour. I tried to show as much as possible of the little details. Since the Sullivans had been FRAMed, she was somewhat bare compared to her WWII configuration. The photos do show the 'light condition' signs on the hatches and miscellaneous cleats on bulkheads. The last 1/3 of the photos are random shots that I made just wondering around to capture what I could. The Twin 40mm mounts look like they were added back to replace 3"/50's that were part of the FRAM fit. The 54 mount has been replaced by a 3"/50 as part of FRAM. There are about 300 images in this gallery. If anyone needs to know the location of a particular shot just email me the photo number at oneslim@hotmail.com and I'll do my best to ID it. Thanks and enjoy. by Bob Wescott |
