USS Jimmy Carter, SSN-23 at the Commissioning Ceremony by Tom Dougherty |
Rollout of the Jimmy Carter from the Electric Boat
Building Facility at night. Hull sections are placed on individual
wheeled mobile carriers. When the submarine sections have been welded
together, the carriers are used to move the completed hull outside, following
a set on rails. There are a second set of rails perpendicular to
the rails used to move the hull out of the building. Another set
of wheels can be lowered to move the hull sideways. The hull is moved onto
a section of decking that can be lowered into a graving dock, which can
be flooded and a gate opened out to the Thames River.
