USS Jimmy Carter, SSN-23 at the Commissioning Ceremony by Tom Dougherty |
A close up of the NR-1 sail. This fiberglass sail is painted bright orange, as the NR-1 sits very low in the water, and could easily be missed and run over by a larger ship. Note also the false deck, which covers numerous control lines and hydraulics that run over the deck to the stern. The NR-1 reactor is extremely small, and generates power that gives a top speed of only 3-4 knots. The twin propeller NR-1 is usually towed to operations sites by a support vessel.
